He had replaced the same air conditioner three times in 25 years and was dreading a fourth. The refrigerant side was fine. The answer was a single number on the air side.

Replacing the equipment three times had never fixed it, because the equipment was never what was wrong.

When the Kuna homeowner called, his air conditioner had quit on a hot afternoon. But the first thing he told us wasn't about the breakdown. He'd replaced this system three times in 25 years, and he was hoping he wasn't about to buy a fourth.

He didn't need to. The reason his air conditioners kept dying wasn't the equipment at all. It was a restriction in the ductwork choking the airflow, and no new system ever fixed it because no new system ever touched it.

What we found

The part that failed that day was a run capacitor. We replaced it and the system was cooling again the same afternoon. That's a common part that dies on its own, and it explained the breakdown. It didn't explain three dead systems.

So we measured further. The refrigerant side was healthy, with a 28.8°F temperature split across the coil. When the refrigerant side is fine and systems still fail early, the cause is on the air side. So we measured the airflow.

Static pressure is the resistance the blower fights to push air through the house. This furnace is rated for a maximum of 0.50 inches of water column. It measured 0.91, almost double.

Why that one number ends compressors

When airflow through the indoor coil is choked that hard, the coil runs too cold, and refrigerant that should leave it as vapor stays partly liquid heading back to the compressor. Compressors handle vapor, not liquid. Fed liquid, they wear out slowly, over years, on a system that looks fine right up until it doesn't.

That's what killed the first three. Not bad luck, and not bad equipment. One restriction in the ductwork, wearing out each system bolted in front of it. Every replacement inherited it on day one.

Where it stands

The system is cooling, and for the first time in 25 years the homeowner knows why the last three didn't last. The fix is to correct the restriction, not to buy a fourth system, and that's the recommendation he left with: find where the ductwork is choking the airflow and open it up, once, for good.
