A failed igniter, flame sensor, blower motor, or control board is where the trouble shows up. The reason it failed matters more: gas pressure, airflow, venting, a control fault, or an installation decision that never got corrected. Degrees too high

The problem

The heat exchanger cracked because the gas valve was set 20 degrees too high.

The furnace runs longer cycles now, so the house holds a steady temperature instead of swinging cold and then suddenly hot.

The call

A furnace that wasn't heating consistently.

What we found

A cracked heat exchanger, and the cause dated to the original installation: the gas valve was set to run the furnace at more than a 70 degree temperature rise, roughly 20 degrees above what the manufacturer rated it for. Running that far above the rating cracked it.

The fix

A cracked heat exchanger means a new furnace, so the work was making sure the new one couldn't fail the same way: we enlarged the return duct so the furnace could move the air it was built for, installed new venting and controls, and set the temperature rise at startup to the middle of the manufacturer's range.

Why it matters

A furnace set up wrong at installation runs hotter than it was built to from its first day, and that heat is what shortens its life. Temperature rise is one of the readings we take on every heat call, which is how a setting like this gets caught.
