Something always seems to quit after hours. Two Boise homes called us when it did, and both evenings ended the same way: the system running again before bed.
Something always seems to quit after hours. Two Boise homes called us when it did, and both evenings ended the same way: the system running again before bed.
The first call came at bedtime
The air conditioner wouldn't turn on, the upstairs was warming, and two kids needed to be asleep. The family called around 7. We were at the door by 7:15.
The fault was a 3 amp low-voltage fuse, the small part that protects the wiring that switches everything else on and off. We replaced it, tested the wiring and controls to confirm nothing was still shorted, and finished setting up their thermostat. The system came back on a little after 8, the upstairs started cooling, and the kids got to sleep.

The control board where the failed fuse lives. When it blows, the whole system sits silent.
The second call came at 8:30 at night
Across town, the cooling was out on a warm evening. We were at the door within 40 minutes.
This one was a blown fuse at the outdoor disconnect, with a loose fuse holder and a loose wire connection. We replaced the fuse from truck stock, tightened both connections, and the system ran. The condenser coil was packed with cottonwood, dog fur, and dirt, so with the owner's go-ahead we cleaned it down to bare metal during the same visit. The air at the registers measured 66 degrees before that work. After it, 46, and the house cooled down right away.

The second home's coil as we found it, packed with cottonwood and dog fur. Matted like this, the unit can't move enough air to cool the house.
Everything else waited for daylight
We evaluate the whole system on every call, including evening ones, and both visits found more than the part that failed. In the first home, a run capacitor testing weak and airflow coming up short on the return side; we came back when the family was ready, replaced the capacitor, and traced the airflow to the 1-inch filter at the furnace. In the second, an aging condenser fan motor and a unit past 23 years old, worth planning to replace; we're ready whenever that owner is.

The 1-inch filter that was restricting airflow, found on the return visit.
None of it needed deciding at night. That is the other half of what an evening call buys: the fix that gets everyone to bed, and a clear list for daylight.
Whatever the hour
We help our customers anytime, cooling season or heating season. On both of these evenings the failure turned out to be small, the part was on the truck, and the house was running again before bed. A Boise parent, after an evening call
The result
Running again the same evening
Both homes came back the same evening the call went out. In one we replaced the failed part and tested the whole system before the kids were asleep. In the other, the air at the registers measured 66 degrees before the coil cleaning and 46 after.
